Rev. Judith Maynard will join Albuquerque Pride as one of the key speakers for this event. National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussing gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersexed and questioning (LGBTIQ) issues. Come join our LGBTIQ communities and our allies at Morningside Park in Albuquerque on Monday, October 11th at 7:00 PM for a candlelight vigil.

In light of the recent suicides and bullying of our LGBTIQ youth, it is important for us to encourage all people, of all sexual orientations, to “take your next step” in living openly and powerfully on this October 11th.

We encourage you, on this day, to wear clothing and jewelry that utilizes gay pride symbols and colors. Our goal is to raise awareness of the LGBTIQ community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to our LGBTIQ rights movement.

Comedy Central comedian Jade Esteban Estrada will perform “A Lullaby for Ryan: The History of HIV/AIDS in America” at 7 pm on Thursday, December 3rd at MCC of Albuquerque.

“A Lullaby for Ryan” incorporates comedy with a tribute to Ryan White. White was an American teenager who became an HIV/AIDS poster child in the 1980s when he was expelled from school because of his disease, which he contracted from a contaminated blood treatment.

Estrada’s method is particularly interesting because he uses entertainment-education in his shows. He uses comedy to educate people about HIV/AIDS. The approach is appealing, particularly to young people. The audience is entertained and at the same time learning.

Admission is free, a love offering will be received.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is held annually to remember those gender variant or transgender people who have been attacked during the year because of their gender identity or expression. This year the number of sisters and brothers who have been murdered has more than doubled with two of them here in Albuquerque.

Even in our more progressive communities, gender variant and transgender people continue to suffer the pain of misunderstanding, abuse and murder. By coming together to remember those we have lost, we also take steps toward awareness and compassion to the hearts and minds of our societies.

An Interfaith Service will be held on Sunday, November 22 at 6:00PM at MCC of Albuquerque. Please join us for this important time to remember and honor lives lost.
