Come and walk the Labyrinth on Wednesday, September 22, from 6 pm until 7:30 pm.

The Labyrinth is a tool to use in contemplative prayer and meditation. Labyrinths are often confused with mazes. A maze has dead ends and blind alleys, while the labyrinth has only one path leading both in and out of the center.

The labyrinth is flat, one can always see the center. The destination is assured, so that the mind can be still and attentive.

Walking the labyrinth clears the mind and gives us insight into our spiritual journeys. The labyrinth does nothing on its own. It is simply a tool helpful for many people in deepening their prayer lives.

Each walk in and out of the labyrinth is a unique opportunity to meet our creative, loving God through contemplative prayer.

Lent is the period of time leading up to Easter. It is a time of preparation of the believer for the annual commemoration during Holy Week where we reflect on the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Lent is forty days long, and represents the time that Jesus spent in the wilderness before the beginning of his public ministry.

Maybe this year the idea of Christmas seems more like work than wonder. Maybe you are just going through the motions of preparing for Christmas. It is my hope that you will remember that God came to us through the birth of baby Jesus and every year we celebrate this miracle and gift.

Angels bring us important messages - and remind us that God is still involved in our world and in our lives.

This week come to church at MCC of Albuquerque and hear about a young woman – Mary – who would give birth to Jesus – the Savior of our world.

I hope to see you this week as we continue our Advent journey.

Peace and love,

Pastor Judy

An evangelist known through the country would use a phrase countless times when he spoke and in his writings-he would refer to, Stepping Stones.

In staff gatherings, board meetings, and even at family conferences he would talk about solving problems or realizing goals by using stepping stones. You see, as a youth, he grew up combing the mountains of West Virginia. When he encountered a new stream or creek with deep water and wanted to continue his adventure without getting soaked, he searched diligently for stepping stones. They were the often overlooked rocks and stones that peak above the current, offering a relatively safe passage to the other side. After he would find those stones, he would carefully evaluate their stability before committing himself to this next leg of his journey and then cross over to his intended destination.

Throughout the life of our church we have encountered many new streams filled with deep water. Our leaders have searched diligently and found stepping stones along the way that enabled us to continue to be a vibrant congregation, reaching out and changing lives.

Our Fearless Giving, general stewardship campaign is yet another stepping stone. As we secure footing, reach new milestones, and more importantly, arrive at our intended destination, our prayer is our church will continue to be a spirit-led church, made up of growing believers, committed to making a difference in their world – connecting people with God through the love of Jesus Christ.

Every household in our church has been asked to prayerfully consider making a financial commitment to be given over a year long period. God is stretching us for a monumental future work as we fearlessly step out in faith and stand firmly on the stepping stones.

Until you become a parent, you don’t realize the sacrifices your parents made for their children.

You may hear a new mom say, I’m sacrificing my career to raise my child. But it doesn’t take too long for her to realize the construction work in the homosapien department is quite rewarding. It can actually be a joy and a learning opportunity to sacrifice. Whatever you may unselfishly give up for your children, you do so in order to provide a better future for your child.

The followers of Christ sacrificed the comfort of their own homes, their livelihood, and many even lost their lives because they loved and believed in the risen Lord. However, their sacrifice was nothing compared to the sacrifice and death of Jesus on the cross as he provided salvation and a better future not only for the present world we live in, but for our eternal home.

We need the church. Our children need the church. A lost and dying world needs the church. Our church was established by individuals who sacrificially gave of their time, talents and gifts. Their legacy is a legacy of sacrifice.

Our Fearless Giving in Fearful Times stewardship program affords our congregation the opportunity to respond by faith to the challenge and opportunity set before us. Sacrificial gifts allows God to work in the lives of the people as we seek to do God’s will and give fearlessly in joy and love, not only for the present generation but for generations to come.

Prayers warriors. You may have heard of them. You may even be one. Usually, a person will have a close friend who is a prayer warrior they call upon when they are making a difficult decision on a spiritual issue in their life. They are desperately needed because obstacle and struggles come your way as Satan tries to discourage, wear you down, or basically get you to change your decision. He and his troops clock in hours and hours of overtime. His tactics may come in the form of doubt or second guessing, an immediate financial disaster, peer pressure, and even sometimes physical and emotional stress. Sometimes, only a miracle will get you through this process.

The disciples needed a miracle as they battled a raging storm. Fear paralyzed their souls. Fear was their only thought, for as the waves crashed against their boat, death was inevitable as they so desperately tried to save their vessel from sinking.

Then suddenly, they had another fear to worry about…a ghost! But, they soon hear the Teacher’s voice say, Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid. (Matthew 14:27), but in all the turmoil, they were not convinced it was Jesus. Peter yelled out above the crashing waves, Lord, it is you, command me to come to you on the water. Jesus replied, Come.

Peter let go of his fears to be with Jesus and once again, Jesus performed a miracle as he and Peter walked on the troubled waters. But when Peter took his eyes off the Savior and began concentrating on the threatening waves, he began to sink. Once again, Jesus saved him and together they walked to the boat, where wide eyed disciples watched and waited. Jesus spoke and immediately the fierce wind stopped, the pounding waves calmed and the disciples were reminded of what walking with Jesus really meant.

Our journeys are no different – and Jesus in the same yesterday, today and forever. He can perform miracles as we walk on the waters of fear, doubt, loneliness, illness, and other monumental waves that crash in our lives, trying to drown us.

We are not alone in this journey. If we pray and keep our eyes on Jesus he reaches out, takes our hand, and calms the storms in our lives.
